Board of Directors

John P. Walker, is an experienced leader in the biotechnology industry and has served as Novacea's Chairman since August of 2006. Mr. Walker also currently is Chairman of the Board of Directors for Renovis, Inc.and serves on the Board of Directors for Affymax, Inc. and Geron Corporation. During his 35-year career, Mr. Walker has served as Chairman, CEO, or Interim CEO of a number of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including KAI Pharmaceuticals and Guava Technologies. From 1993 to 2001, he was Chairman, CEO, and a Director of AXYS Pharmaceuticals Inc. and its predecessor company, Arris Pharmaceutical Corporation. Prior to Arris, Mr. Walker was Chairman and CEO of Vitaphore Corporation, a biomaterials company that was sold to Union Carbide Chemical and Plastics Company, Inc. Mr. Walker began his career with American Hospital Supply Corporation, where he held a variety of general management, sales, and operational positions. Mr. Walker also has served as President of American Medical Systems and The Hospital Company.

Judy A. Hemberger, Ph.D., is the former co-founder, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Pharmion Corporation and has recently served as interim chief executive officer of Zosano Pharma, a privately-held biotechnology company. Prior to her positions at Pharmion from 1999 to 2006, she worked at Marion Laboratories and successor companies Marion Merrell Dow and Hoechst Marion Roussel. She led a number of strategic functions including Professional Education, Global Regulatory Affairs, Global Medical Affairs, and Commercial Development. Her final role in the company was senior vice president of Global Drug Regulatory Affairs. Dr. Hemberger currently serves on the Board of Directors of Renovis, Zymogenetics, Zosano Pharma, Atani, Ltd., Chroma Therapeutics and Perrigo Company. Dr. Hemberger received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Mount St. Scholastica College and completed her doctorate degree in Pharmacology from the University of Missouri. Dr. Hemberger also earned an MBA in Business from Rockhurst College.

James Healy, M.D., Ph.D., is a Managing Director at Sofinnova Ventures, which is focused on building successful companies serving medical markets. Prior to joining Sofinnova, Dr. Healy was a partner at Sanderling Ventures, where he was the lead or a founding investor in several early stage biomedical companies. He is an author of numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications on the molecular aspects of immune regulation. He has previously held positions at Miles (Bayer) Pharmaceuticals, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Healy is a member of various professional associations and currently serves on the Board of Directors of InterMune Pharmaceuticals, BioSpace.com, and other privately held companies. He received a B.A. in molecular biology and a B.A. in Scandinavian studies from the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with highest honors. Dr. Healy completed his M.D. and earned his Ph.D. in immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine.

Camille Samuels joined Versant in 2000, shortly after its formation. She has been actively involved in Versant's investments in Biospect, Fluidigm, Genomic Health, Novacea, ParAllele, Reliant Pharmaceuticals, and Syrrx. Prior to Versant, Ms. Samuels was a Director of Business Development at Tularik Inc., where she was responsible for corporate strategy and developing partnerships around clinical and preclinical therapeutic programs. She also led Tularik's Technology Acquisition Group, a group that was charged with retaining the company's technological advantage. Before Tularik, Ms. Samuels worked in business development and strategic planning at Millennium Pharmaceuticals (Predictive Medicine Division) and Genzyme Corporation. Ms. Samuels started her career as an Associate Consultant with LEK Consulting, providing management consulting and M&A advisory services primarily to healthcare clients. Ms. Samuels earned a B.A. in biology from Duke University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, where she graduated as a Baker Scholar. In 2002, The Aspen Institute named Ms. Samuels a Henry Crown Fellow.

Michael Raab joined NEA in June 2002 and specializes in healthcare investments focusing on biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Prior to joining NEA, Mr. Raab was most recently Senior Vice President, Therapeutics and General Manager of Renagel at Genzyme Corporation where he turned Renagel into a $1 billion opportunity. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Business Development for the Therapeutics Division, where he was responsible for the identification and in-licensing of new therapeutic product opportunities. Mr. Raab gained extensive international experience while building a commercial operation in Latin American for the Therapeutics and Surgical Products groups for the company. Mr. Raab was also Product Manager for Ceredase and was instrumental in the worldwide launch of Cerezyme, Genzyme's $600 million therapy for Gaucher Disease, during which he spent two years with Genzyme's Diagnostic Products and Services Division. Previous to Genzyme, Mr. Raab held sales and marketing positions at Repligen and Bristol-Myers. He received a B.A. from DePauw University.

Lowell E. Sears is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Investment Officer of Sears Capital Management, Inc. Mr. Sears has been a venture investor and portfolio manager through Sears Capital Management since 1994. From 1988 until 1994, Mr. Sears was Chief Financial Officer of Amgen, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. In addition to his role as CFO with Amgen, Mr. Sears also held the position of Senior Vice President responsible for the Asia Pacific Region, establishing marketing, sales, and development operations in Japan, China and other countries from 1992 through 1994. From 1986 until 1988 Mr. Sears served as Treasurer and Director of Planning for Amgen. Before joining Amgen, Mr. Sears held senior planning and financial positions with Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) from 1976 until 1986, including a period as Chief Financial Officer for its Ventures Division. Mr. Sears has been an active participant in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries since 1979. Mr. Sears holds a B.A. in economics from Claremont McKenna College and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Daniel M. Bradbury has been Chief Executive Officer of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since March 2007, serving as President and Chief Operating Officer since 2003. He has served as a director of Amylin since June 2006. He joined Amylin in 1994 and has held officer-level positions in Corporate Development and Marketing during that time. Prior to joining Amylin, Mr. Bradbury spent ten years at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, where he held a number of sales and marketing positions. He is a member of the board of directors of Cerexa, Inc., Illumina, Inc. and Novacea, Inc. He also serves as a board member for BIOCOM. Mr. Bradbury is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and serves as Chair of the Advisory Council of the Keck Graduate Institute. He received a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Nottingham University and a Diploma in Management Studies from Harrow and Ealing Colleges of Higher Education.
